Since the path through Router Three is three hops, and the path through Router One is two hops, Router Two chooses the path through One and discards the information it learned through Three. Router Two chooses the path to Network A by examination of the hop count through each available path. For instance, all the routers in the network in Figure 1 run Routing Information Protocol (RIP). Basic TheoryĪ typical distance vector protocol saves this information when it computes the best path to a destination: the distance (total metric or distance, such as hop count) and the vector (the next hop). The later version of in EIGRP is recommended because it includes many performance and stability enhancements. Cisco IOS® versions earlier than 10.3(11), 11.0(8), and 11.1(3) run the earlier version of EIGRP some of this information does not apply to older versions. There are two major revisions of EIGRP, versions 0 and 1.
